"Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood."
The exciting northern phenomenon that is embodied by our Aurora Amulets is the Aurora Borealis. We know that the Aurora Brealis is caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with atoms and charged particles at high altitudes. The colision energies are radiated in the form of various colors of light that are seen onearth as wispy a glow or curtain of light. It often seems to come down and touch the ground!

This scientific explanation is rather detached, and not as moving or emotional as the explanations of the Aurora given by the native peoples in the region of the Bering Sea - that they are spirits playing ball with a walrus skull in the sky, or torches carried by spirits guiding departed souls to their afterlives. (I am partial to thinking of the Aurora in the old way!)

Our Aurora Amulets "A" and "B" are each made from the same chunk of 3000-year-old Tri-color Fossil Walrus Ivory we found on a beach in Kamchatka. (It is rare to find bright white Fossil Walrus Ivory surrounded by Tan and Brown outer layers.) The colors are similar to Amulets unearthed in Kamchatka about 40 miles inland, so we know that early inhabitants walked great distances to find just the correct color Ivories for their Amulets. We enhanced the piece with the addition of one of our sparkling Blue Opals. 1 3/8 inch long, 3/4 inch wide. With leather neck thong.

Of course, these are one-of-a-kind pieces.

Fossil Ivory Color Charts

Below are the available colors of our fossil ivories. Our high quality fossilized ivories have been reclaimed from the ground after sharing the earth for up to 30 millennia! Even after all this time, Fossil Ivory remains warm and sensuous organic ivory; it is not petrified. It has developed its beautiful colors by taking up minerals from the earth and these colors are impossible to match in any contemporary ivories by modern processes.
