The exciting northern phenomenon that is embodied by our Aurora Borealis Spirit Amulet is the ever-changing spiritlike Aurora Borealis that occurs in the northern skies. We know that the Aurora Brealis is caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with atoms and charged particles at high altitudes. The colision energies are radiated in the form of various colors of light that are seen on earth as a wispy glow or curtain of light. It often seems to come down and touch the ground!

This scientific explanation is rather detached, and not as moving or emotional as the explanations of the Aurora given by the native peoples in the region of the Bering Sea - that they are spirits playing ball with a walrus skull in the sky, or torches carried by spirits guiding departed souls to their afterlives. (I am partial to thinking of the Aurora in the old way!) To confuse the spirits, native peoples whistle when they see the Aurora.

As in the north, the opal Aurora dominates the sky in our Aurora Borealis Spirit Amulet. Your Aurora Borealis Spirit Amulet will be different rom any other we make, since we vary the shape of the opal Aurora in each piece. The land in the night scene is complemented by a chunk of 1500-year-old Rust-color Fossil Walrus Ivory we found on a beach in Nome. All are enclosed in a fully backed sterling silver frame. 1 1/2 inch long, 1 inch wide. Comes complete with sterling silver chain.

Our wonderful Ivories have been reclaimed from the ground after sharing the earth for up to 30 millennia! Even after all this time, Fossil Ivory remains warm and sensuous organic ivory; it is not petrified. It has developed its beautiful colors by taking up minerals from the earth and these colors are impossible to match in any contemporary ivories by modern processes. In time, the Fossil Ivories you wear or use will take on very personal hues from your contact. They will become a part of you.
